The Krimml waterfalls - Austria’s highest waterfalls and Europe’s biggest waterfalls. With a water drop of 380 meters (1,246 feet) these waterfalls are a natural spectacle that you don’t want to miss when visiting the Austrian Alps.
As part of the Hohe Tauern national park, the falls are located in the Austrian province of Salzburg. It’s a 2-hour drive from the city of Salzburg or roughly 90 min from Innsbruck - perfect for a day trip from either city.
The waterfall trail guides you from the parking lot passed the waterfall centre directly to the base of the waterfall. The waterfall centre has a permanent exhibition and multi-media show about the waterfalls but also smaller, changing exhibitions to cover all aspects “water”. A 45-50 min hike will take you to the top of the falls with lots of viewing platforms along the way where you can see and feel the power of the falling water masses. It is incredibly spectacular to be so close to so much water just falling off a cliff. Also if you’re visiting on a sunny day be prepared to see lots of rainbows. You will feel like you were transported into a fairytale landscape! It’s a magical atmosphere!
The waterfall centre and trail are open daily from 9 am - 5 pm from mid-April until the end of October, there are different ticket options. If you only want to do the trail to the waterfall and up to the top it is €4.00 for adults.
There is also a smaller trail that also leads to the base of the falls (but on the other side of the river). This trail, however, is public and free of charge and at the end of the trail, you will have a great view from the side towards the lower part of the waterfall! Highly recommend also checking out this trail after you have done the main trail to the top of the falls. It is about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the base of the falls (either side of the river).
For more information check out the official websites of the waterfall trail and the waterfall centre.
Also here is a google map with all the trails and viewing platforms, parking lots and points of interest. Feel free to save it to your google maps and hopefully it will help you to plan your trip to this remarkable place!
